This is old news really but its interesting to note that the south korean government has taken initatives to encourage gamming as an industry while also addressing the negative effects gaming has on a small minority of the population. They even call it esports.

I think its time for me to learn some Korean and find a job there and maybe bag a babe or two in a bang lol. But probably wont happen in regards to the recent nuclear testing and tensions from North Korea.

The article makes for a good read, thanks for sharing.

I'll just say I'm Korean, and the last time I went to korea... well.. lets just say my cousins bought me 15 hours in PC Bang, for arund 90 cents per hour. In American, the average cost per hour at a PC room would be 3$ I was hooked on to the game called Kart Rider, if you read in the article. The game is pretty addicting, and I used to play it all the time. Every single person in my family tends to go to PC Bang at least once every 2 weeks, while the younger people go almost every other day. My uncle plays this type of korean gambling game on the net, although you don't trade in real money.

Corea is really only rabid toward starcraft. The rest they are only crazy about.

Interesting.

Wait a few years and that might be popular in the west.

yea, i went to korea 2 summers ago, and went to COEX. they had a broadcast of a star craft match going on and the room was literally packed, could barely moved, and right behind the stage there was a pc area. the 2 tv game networks are hilarious, cause they show the really popular, high tech games and simple side scrollers as well, like maplestory. and if theres a starbucks on every corner in seattle, there 2 pc cafe's on every street in seoul lol.

but....

"Some play themselves to death. Last year, the deaths of
at least seven people were attributed to excessive game-
playing. In August, a 28-year-old man died after nearly
50 straight hours of playing online games. In December,
a 38-year-old day worker collapsed and died at an Internet
café; his logs showed that he had played for 417 hours
in his last 20 days. There are private telephone
emergency services that dispatch ambulances for children
who collapse while gaming or refuse to come out of their
rooms, where they remain glued to online games or
threaten violence at intervening parents."

tell me its not a little scary too
